A Helping Hand

Pipilotti's installation "Himalaya's Sisters Living Room" was really the piece that swayed me through my initial ideas. Her exploration of a space familiar to all, really is phenomenal. The dim lighting, the rough looking arrangement, the animations being projected onto odd objects really pull you in and out of a reality that does not exist. This piece helped me realise that there is no boundary I cannot cross in order to gain what i am looking for.

Pushing The Boundries.

I have tried hard to pull inspiration from all aspects of Pipilottis work, from the deranged, over sensitive yet dark film style, to her some what under valued installation pieces.
I have tugged at as many strings as i believe she would, from changing something drastic like the lighting, to the minor edits such as the placement of a prop. I did not just run in with a camera and get snap happy. I set up my scene with every inch of detail being covered. Every item and being in my final piece is there for a reason. I have done my best to give each inch of the image its own story, which - from my research on Pipilotti - i have noticed she does the same.

Object...Plug

Feminism/Feminist Power
1. the doctrine advocating social, political, and other rights of women equal to those of men.
2. an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.
3. feminine character.

Its comes as no surprise that Rist is a feminine character, she holds herself against her femininity, and the female form. She uses her sexuality as her power, maybe as her driving force. This then became my connection...Power.

Plug
There are many meanings for the word 'Plug' itself, after looking through plenty of them i decided to go with the most familiar. The household three pin plug. The plug holds the majority of the power supplied to our every day lives. A switch board which may contain many plugs is still powered by one plug. If this plug is removed then all power is lost. I decided to turn this into metaphor. For example, if the Queen is removed from Monarchy, the monarchy will fall (doubtful i know). If the heart is removed from man, then man will not be able to function. This then led me to my final idea... If a puppet loses its master, then the puppet is powerless.
